This production premiered in New York at the ACT FRENCH Festival, A Season of New Theater from France between July 15 – Dec 15, 2005, six months of intriguing ideas and performances from the front lines of French culture in adventurous theaters in New York. In the audience at this festival, was Matei Visniec himself. This encounter would prove to open the door for Trap Door’s international impact. Old Clown Wanted then performed in Chicago as part of Trap Door’s 2006 season. On Matei Visniec’s recommendation, Trap Door was invited to perform Old Clown Wanted, all expenses paid, at the Fun-Underground Festival in Arad, the International Theatre Festival in Sibiu, Targu Mures, and The National Theatre in Bucharest the following year in 2007.

The production in New York as part of the ACT FRENCH Festival, was presented at the HERE Art Center. HERE’s Supported Artist Program, provides artists with subsidized space, as well as technical and administrative support. The ACT FRENCH festival was made possible by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, Association Francaise d’Action Artistique (AFAA), The French Ministry of Culture and Communication, FACE (French American Cultural Exchange), Etant donns: The French-American Fund for the Performing Arts.
